THE WORK OF ANGELS

490.010.000       Torrey: p506, T:I
Topic 10:   The Work of Angels in behalf of the Heirs of Salvation.

490.010.010       Torrey: p506, T:I, P:1
POINT 10:   Angels minister to the physical needs of God's children.

Hebrews 1:14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

1 Kings 19:5-8 [5] Then he lay down under the tree and fell asleep. All at once an angel touched him and said, "Get up and eat." [6] He looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again. [7] The angel of the LORD came back a second time and touched him and said, "Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you." [8] So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.

Matthew 4:11 Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

Luke 22:43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.

POINT 20:   Angels are charged to protect those who follow the Lord.

Psalms 91:11-12 [11] For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; [12] they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

490.010.030       Torrey: p507, T:I, P:3
POINT 30:   Angels protect God's servants from their enemies.

2 Kings 6:15-17 [15] When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. "Oh, my lord, what shall we do?" the servant asked. [16] "Don't be afraid," the prophet answered. "Those who are with us are more than those who are with them." [17] And Elisha prayed, "O LORD, open his eyes so he may see." Then the LORD opened the servant's eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

Matthew 26:53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?

(Generally, a legion is 10,000 troops. Roman legions of Jesus' time were about 6,000 troups.)

Genesis 19:11 Then they struck the men who were at the door of the house, young and old, with blindness so that they could not find the door.

2 Kings 6:18 As the enemy came down toward him, Elisha prayed to the LORD, "Strike these people with blindness." So he struck them with blindness, as Elisha had asked.

490.010.040       Torrey: p507, T:I, P:4
POINT 40:   Angels deliver God's servants from peril and evil.

Acts 5:19 But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out.

Acts 12:8-11 [8] Then the angel said to him, "Put on your clothes and sandals." And Peter did so. "Wrap your cloak around you and follow me," the angel told him. [9] Peter followed him out of the prison, but he had no idea that what the angel was doing was really happening; he thought he was seeing a vision. [10] They passed the first and second guards and came to the iron gate leading to the city. It opened for them by itself, and they went through it. When they had walked the length of one street, suddenly the angel left him. [11] Then Peter came to himself and said, "Now I know without a doubt that the Lord sent his angel and rescued me from Herod's clutches and from everything the Jewish people were anticipating."

Daniel 6:22 My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, O king."

490.010.050       Torrey: p507, T:I, P:5
POINT 50:   Angels cheer God's servants in hardship and seeming danger.

Acts 27:23-24 [23] Last night an angel of the God whose I am and whom I serve stood beside me [24] and said, `Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.'

490.010.060       Torrey: p507, T:I, P:6
POINT 60:   Angels reveal God's purposes to His servants.

Luke 1:11, 13, 19 [11] Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. [13] But the angel said to him: "Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John. [19] The angel answered, "I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to tell you this good news.

490.010.070       Torrey: p508, T:I, P:7
POINT 70:   Angels show God's servants what to do.

Matthew 2:13, 19-20 [13] When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. "Get up," he said, "take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him." [19] After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt [20] and said, "Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child's life are dead."

Matthew 1:20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

Acts 8:26 Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, "Go south to the road -- the desert road -- that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza."

Acts 10:3-6 [3] One day at about three in the afternoon he had a vision. He distinctly saw an angel of God, who came to him and said, "Cornelius!" [4] Cornelius stared at him in fear. "What is it, Lord?" he asked. The angel answered, "Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God. [5] Now send men to Joppa to bring back a man named Simon who is called Peter. [6] He is staying with Simon the tanner, whose house is by the sea."

490.010.080       Torrey: p508, T:I, P:8
POINT 80:   Angels take God's servants at their death to a place of blessedness.

Luke 16:22 The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried.

490.010.090       Torrey: p508, T:I, P:9
POINT 90:   When Jesus comes He will send His angels to gather the elect.

Matthew 24:31 And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.

490.020.000       Torrey: p508, T:II
Topic 20:   The Law Given through Angels

490.020.010       Torrey: p508, T:II, P:1
POINT 10:   The law was given through the angels.

Hebrews 2:2-3a [2] For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, [3] how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation?

Galatians 3:19 What, then, was the purpose of the law? It was added because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the promise referred had come. The law was put into effect through angels by a mediator.

Acts 7:53 you who have received the law that was put into effect through angels but have not obeyed it.

490.030.000       Torrey: p509, T:III
Topic 30:   The Presence of Angels at the Second Coming

490.030.010       Torrey: p509, T:III, P:1
POINT 10:   Angels will come with the Son of Man when He comes to judge the nations and to execute judgment on the wicked.

Matthew 25:31-32 [31] "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. [32] All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.

2 Thessalonians 1:7-8 [7] and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. [8] He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.

490.040.000       Torrey: p509, T:IV
Topic 40:   The Executioners of God's Wrath toward the Wicked.

490.040.010       Torrey: p509, T:IV, P:1
POINT 10:   At the end of the age angels will gather all things that cause stumbling and cast them into eternal fire.

Matthew 13:24-30, 39- 42 [24] Jesus told them another parable: "The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. [25] But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. [26] When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared. [27] "The owner's servants came to him and said, `Sir, didn't you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?' [28] " `An enemy did this,' he replied. "The servants asked him, `Do you want us to go and pull them up?' [29] " `No,' he answered, `because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them. [30] Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.'" [39] and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels. [40] "As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age. [41] The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. [42] They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 13:47-50 [47] Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. [48] When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. [49] This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous [50] and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

God's angels are the executioners of God's wrath toward the wicked as well as His mercy to toward the righteous. In this also are they doing service for the sake of those who shall inherit salvation?
